Helen Glassford

Born in Lancaster in 1976, Helen studied at Carlisle Art College for a year before continuing with a Fine Art degree course at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art, Dundee from which she graduated in 2002.

Helen currently lives and works from Newport on Tay, her studio with a spectacular outlook across the Tay and beyond towards the Sidlaws.

For Helen, landscape painting goes far beyond the portrayal of the physical landscape we all see to something much deeper.

Having been brought up in the Lake District and exposed to the great outdoors from an early age by her father, Helen has always felt connected to the landscape, whether it be the dramatic weathers and rolling landscapes she experiences close to her studio, or the remote wilderness of the North-West of Scotland and its’ Islands.

She thrives on being out in the environment, preferring to travel solo as this sharpens her senses and allows her mind to wander.  Drawn to some of Scotland’s most inaccessible and isolated areas, Helen searches for places where human presence is sparse, or not evident at all.  However, despite the isolation and remoteness, she doesn’t find these solitary experiences, instead the living landscape with its numerous personalities offering Helen a sense of connection, comfort and reassurance.

"My life in art begins and ends with encounters with Scottish landscape and a deep desire to translate and communicate this in my practice."
